Here’s how we help:

Orthopedic Manual PT

At Preferred Physical Therapy, we specialize in non-operative and post-surgical orthopedic care. Our physical therapists are leaders in the field and include board-certified specialists. Most importantly, we tailor our expertise to meet your needs and goals for health with personalized plans for each patient.

How Orthopedic Manual PT Works

Through Orthopedic Manuel PT, our team emphasizes the prevention, identification, assessment, minimization, and correction of pain and disability due to acute or prolonged musculoskeletal impairment. This includes post-surgical as well as non-surgical conditions. The goal of treatment is to promote optimal health and function using a variety of interventions to diminish pain, impairments, and disability associated with orthopedic disorders.

Examples of some commonly used interventions include manual physical therapy, therapeutic exercise, as well as ergonomic intervention, and education. Therapists who are board-certified as Orthopedic Clinical Specialists by the American Physical Therapy Association are optimally trained and educated to effectively deal with orthopedic disorders.

Is Orthopedic Manual PT right for you?

We using Orthopedic Manual PT to treat the following issues:

  • Low-back and neck pain
  • Muscle-tension headaches
  • General arthritic complaints
  • Hip and knee osteoarthritis
  • Shoulder pain
  • Muscle strains
  • Joint sprains

Specific diagnoses, such as ACL sprains and tears, patellofemoral pain syndrome, meniscus tears, hip and shoulder labral tears, plantar fasciitis, bunions, achilles tendonitis, ankle sprains, and strains, rotator cuff tears, shoulder impingement syndrome, frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis), golfer’s elbow or tennis elbow (epicondylitis), wrist pain or carpal tunnel syndrome are particularly improved with our treatments.

In addition, post-surgical rehabilitation is critical for a successful recovery from operations, such as anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction, total hip and knee replacement, shoulder decompression, laminectomies, discectomies, and fracture and tendon repairs.

Chronic Pain

While acute pain is a normal sensation triggered in the nervous system to alert you to possible injury and the need to take care of yourself, chronic pain is different. Chronic pain persists. Pain signals keep firing in the nervous system for weeks, months, or even years.

Common chronic pain complaints include headaches, low back pain, arthritis pain, or neurogenic pain (pain resulting from damage to the peripheral nerves or to the central nervous system itself).

How to treat your chronic pain

Chronic pain makes everything harder than it has to be, from getting up in the morning to brushing your teeth before you go to bed. Our team believes that life doesn’t just stop because you have chronic pain. We specialize in getting people just like you up and moving again through a wide range of cutting-edge physical therapy treatments, like Trigger Point Dry Needling, massage therapy, and more.

Many patients who have chronic low-back and neck pain, headaches, general arthritic complaints, hip and knee osteoarthritis, and shoulder pain will benefit from our comprehensive management approaches.

Pelvic Floor Therapy

An estimated one-third of adult women suffer from pelvic floor dysfunction, a group of clinical conditions that includes urinary and fecal incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, and pelvic pain. With the increased aging population, the national cost burden related to pelvic floor disorders (PFDs) is becoming enormous in terms of lost productivity, decreased quality of life, and direct health care costs*.

Pelvic floor disorders most often plague women, but an increasingly growing number of men are also being diagnosed. Symptoms of PFD include urinary incontinence, urinary urgency, and frequency, a feeling of incomplete urination, decreased urine flow and constipation, pelvic pain with intercourse, pain in the testicles (and/or penis), and pain in the lower back. Often, patients and clinicians are unaware that effective treatment exists for these disorders.

A thorough evaluation and highly individualized treatment that includes exercise prescription, biofeedback training, soft-tissue techniques, patient education, electrotherapy on or near the pelvic floor, and behavioral/bladder retraining. Following treatment for urinary-related issues, patients generally experience a decrease in voiding frequency and urgency, along with the improvement of pelvic floor muscle contraction quality, endurance, and strength. In the treatment of painful urologic and gynecologic conditions, the expected outcomes include the reduction of pain and normalization of the resting tone of the pelvic floor muscles.

Balance, Vestibular, and Fall Prevention

As we age, the body begins to lose control of that righting series, and eventually, balance reactions can become sluggish and less responsive, resulting in an increased risk of falls. The Falls Prevention program is specially designed to help individuals maintain or increase their independence and identify individuals who may be at risk of falling.

Falls are the most common cause of emergency room visits among older adults. When the body is thrown off balance, there are a normal series of specific “righting reactions” the body goes through to keep itself from falling.

Standardized balance testing determines the basis for the program methods and goals. The program includes specific exercises, strength, flexibility, and proper gait, to maintain balance and prevent falls.

Fall Prevention with EPPTS can help to:

  • Address loss of strength, mobility, and coordination
  • Return to independent living after a fall
  • Improve balance to reduce the risk of a fall

What to Expect

Our certified clinicians will evaluate your risk of falling by assessing balance, mobility, and strength. A personalized plan of care will be designed to meet your individual needs and help you achieve your goals.

Balance training exercises will be used to help the body “practice” the balance righting series and allow reaction times to be more automatic, decreasing the risk of falls. Dynamic strengthening exercises will also prepare the body to respond and react to a loss of balance with less risk of falling.

Recommendations will be made to address factors in the home, work, and community environments that may contribute to increased fall risk.

Preferred Physical Therapy’s Workplace Services and Industrial Health program applies the fundamentals of occupational health, safety training, and injury prevention education. Offering on-site occupational health services, including ergonomic assessment, injury prevention education, and seminars, we work to improve employee health and productivity.

Join us at Preferred Physical Therapy for industrial health services:

  • Pre-Employment Testing - Pre-employment testing provides validated, job-specific testing to ensure new employees are physically able to perform the critical functions of their jobs. An essential component of any company’s workplace injury prevention strategy, it’s customized to your workplace’s physical demands. Because the majority of workplace injuries occur within the first year of employment, occupational health services help to reduce workers’ compensation costs.
  • First Aid for Non-Recordable Musculoskeletal Symptoms - Address employee health concerns and minor injuries before they progress enough in severity to require long-term treatment and time off. We offer a cost-effective treatment that assists in determining the need for First Aid care, weighing the need to escalate care for more advanced medical evaluation and treatment, and it’s available at all four Preferred Physical Therapy locations. Our treatment meets all OSHA guidelines for First Aid.
  • ADA Job Description Development - Ensure you comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act with specialized job descriptions that meet ADA guidelines for each position’s essential functions. With assessments of physical needs, including measuring forces necessary to perform functions, Preferred Physical Therapy writes job descriptions that meet ADA format requirements and protect against liabilities.
  • Job Safety Educational Services - Education is a critical component of a safe work environment! We design our safety seminars to specifically address the demands of your workplace. Observing typical duties, we develop an exercise or education program built around keeping your employees healthy in a real-world work environment. Completely customizable to your company’s needs, choose the length and schedule that suits your staffing needs, and rely on Preferred Physical Therapy to produce custom, written, or audiovisual injury prevention materials for your workplace.
  • Job Analysis and Ergonomic Assessments - Our ergonomic experts visit your worksite and assess the kinesthetic and ergonomic demands of your team. From ergonomic recommendations for office workers to manufacturing, construction, or any other setting, we educate workers to best position themselves and most effectively meet the demands of their job duties to “fit” their physical needs. A vital strategy to reduce repetitive strain injuries or musculoskeletal injuries, ergonomic assessments also improve overall productivity.
  • Fit-For-Duty Testing - Ensure ongoing employee health with Fit-for-Duty testing. Evaluate workers who return to work after an injury and other medical leave with a physical ability test, which protects them against over-extending their abilities or returning to work before they’re fully recovered.
  • Functional Capacity Evaluations - We assess injured workers’ lifting, pushing, pulling, positional tolerance, endurance, balance, and job-specific additional tasks to determine their readiness to return to work or create limits to duty. Using essential functions from a job description, we craft tests that address each worker’s specific responsibilities and individual injuries. Applying appropriate Department of Labor criteria, we identify the appropriate physical demand work category for injured workers. We use the WorkSTEPS® licensed program for our functional capacity evaluation format, and we perform the evaluations at the south Fort Collins clinic.

Pre-employment testing can be incredibly helpful in the sense that it can identify applicants who will be likely to perform well in their jobs. This testing allows employers to save time and decrease turnover rates, as well as to improve overall safety and morale. Pre-employment testing has demonstrated consistent results and a positive return on investment for companies in a large variety of industries.
  • Modified Duty Development - When employees are injured, they are frequently released from the physician to resume work on “modified duty.” Many employers don’t have return-to-work plans that meet rehabilitative demands, which limits workers’ reintroduction to the workplace. Our occupational therapists develop safe, modified-duty options and job descriptions based on common, weight-handling restrictions that meet Americans with Disabilities Act standardization.

Research shows that employees who return to work as quickly as possible incur significantly fewer total injury costs for employers, even when it’s only on modified duty development. Save overall costs and rehabilitate workers more effectively with CIM’s modified duty development.
